Leading Chinese fertilizer enterprises are pioneering AI applications that span the entire industrial chain — from automated production lines to satellite-guided precision farming services.

Smart Manufacturing: Robotics and Automation Redefine Production

At Xinyangfeng's headquarters in Jingmen, Hubei Province, intelligent robotic arms now handle fertilizer packaging and loading with remarkable precision. Four sets of mechanical arms operate along conveyor belts, guided by 3D smart scanning devices that instantly recognize truck compartments and stack compound fertilizer bags — all without human intervention. The company's Guangxi base has seen loading efficiency surge from 1,400 to 1,800 bags per hour following automation upgrades, far exceeding manual capacity.

The system also features automatic counting, real-time inventory synchronization, and early equipment failure warnings — dramatically easing labor pressure during peak sales seasons. Xinyangfeng Vice President Wang Yanfeng stated that smart loading represents only a fraction of the company's digital transformation. "We have completed full-base digitalization with a comprehensive data collection and intelligent control platform that aggregates real-time production data, supports decision-making, and enables 24/7 safety monitoring with proactive hazard alerts."

Data-Driven Operations: Efficiency Gains Across the Board

Kingenta Group has leveraged AI coding tools to build an intelligent operations platform that unifies management of dozens of internal digital systems. The result: overall operational efficiency improved by over 30%, with more stable and secure equipment operation. Yuntianhua's Tianan Chemical plant achieved even more striking results — after deploying AI systems capable of autonomous parameter adjustment to replace manual control of critical equipment, the enterprise reduced annual coal consumption by nearly 10,000 tons and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 20,000 tons, generating millions in economic benefits.

"The core value of AI for fertilizer production is driving the industry from experience dependency to data-driven precision," said He Ping, researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS). Traditional fertilizer manufacturing relied heavily on veteran operators' personal experience for process regulation and parameter setting — when raw material quality fluctuated, responses lagged, often leading to high energy consumption and inconsistent product quality. Now, IoT-enabled full-process data collection and machine learning dynamic optimization give production systems adaptive self-regulation capability.

From Factory to Field: Precision Agriculture Services

AI's impact extends well beyond production facilities into sales, distribution, and planting services — fundamentally changing the industry's service model. Xinyangfeng's digital agriculture service platform leverages satellite monitoring and agricultural big data to deliver weather alerts, pest control recommendations, and customized planting and fertilization plans directly to farmers. Farmers can now place orders via mobile devices while management tracks real-time sales data across regions for faster, more precise market decisions.

Shandong Nongda Technology has adopted a unique "community clinic" model, transforming agricultural service stations into localized AI-powered hubs. Each station covers approximately 10,000 mu (667 hectares) of farmland, combining local soil conditions, climate data, and veteran farmers' experience with AI-generated precision planting solutions. Chairman Ma Xuewen explained that the enterprise's smart agriculture platform integrates satellite and drone monitoring with massive agricultural datasets to provide standardized, precision cultivation guidance — helping farmers achieve scientific planting, stable yields, and increased income.

Future Vision: AI + Slow-Release Fertilizer for Global Smallholders

Kingenta Group is pushing the frontier further by integrating AI with slow-release fertilizer technology to develop smart fertilization solutions for smallholder farmers worldwide. The company plans to build demand forecasting models that align production with seasonal planting cycles, addressing long-standing capacity mismatch challenges. As He Ping observes, the industry is undergoing a fundamental paradigm shift on two fronts: fertilizer products are evolving from generic formulations to precision, region-specific and crop-specific solutions, while enterprises are transforming from commodity suppliers into comprehensive planting solution providers.

Challenges on the Road Ahead

Despite remarkable progress, the intelligent transformation of the fertilizer sector remains in its early stages. Structural imbalances persist — large enterprises lead the charge while many SMEs still operate at semi-automated levels with low equipment connectivity. Technical adaptation challenges, weak data foundations, and high implementation costs remain significant barriers. Ding Wencheng, associate researcher at CAAS, noted that the fertilizer industry's dual nature — spanning industrial production and agricultural application — means generic AI solutions cannot be directly applied. Field-level deployment requires long-term, multi-location validation across diverse soil and climate conditions.

Nevertheless, the direction is clear. As data becomes a core production factor and intelligence becomes the new mode of production, China's fertilizer industry is poised for higher-quality development. This transformation will not only enhance industrial competitiveness but also provide more robust support for global food security — a mission of paramount importance as the world faces increasing agricultural challenges.
